Annual Awards

The Annual KZNRU Club Rugby Awards were held on Monday 4 October at The Absa Stadium Durban to honour the clubs and teams who have enjoyed success this rugby season. Addressing the assembled club representatives, players, captains, coaches and administrators, Peter Hassard, President of the KZNRU addressed said: "This past season has been a very interesting one. We changed the format of the Castle Murray Cup and it was a great success. Our grateful thanks go to SA Breweries and Derek Macaskill for putting it together. Thanks also to House of Paint for their sponsorship of the Moor Cup. Well done to the teams for their achievments.

"The U20 league was a great success, I'd say the finals of the U20A and U20B was some of the finest rugby I've watched in KZN over the last 10 years. Well done to the teams that won as well as to the losers for contributing to wonderful games.

"To the individual sponsors of each club, the KZNRU thanks each and every one of you for your generous sponsorship, we know the financial implications of running club rugby and without the sponsors, it would be very difficult to put club rugby together.

"Thanks too to the referees, without you, the game can't be played. I'd like to thank the KZN Referees Society for handling all the fixtures this year, and to Paul Ackermann the secretary who has done sterling work.

"To the Fixtures Committee which is sometimes a thankless job, Gary Meyer and your committeee, thanks for a job well done despite the disruptions to the club season brought on by the Soccer World Cup. You managed it well.

"To Pete Smith and Albert Hannekom who manage Club Rugby in KZN, thank you both. To the Under 19 sponsors Starlight Aviation, thank you for coming on board. I think the Under 19 competition went off very well and I think it was enjoyed by the youngsters who took part. We also managed to pull in a lot of kids from the schools to play in this competition.

"To everyone involved, thank you very much."
