Starlite Aviation Under 19 Trophy
2010 sees the birth of the Starlite Aviation Under 19 Trophy, a unique tournament contested by five of the top clubs in KZN.
Two influencing guidelines at the 2010 fixtures planning committee session initiated and entertained the tournament to become a reality. These were the fact that the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup was a key factor in the planning of the 2010 KZNRU rugby fixtures. The second was the SARU decision to have a double-round at Currie Cup Under 19 level.
The main aim of the tournament is to develop and maintain our youth rugby structures while the provincial leagues are being played. The tournament will be closely monitored by The Sharks Under 19 Coaching and Management team.
The tournament will take place over four Wednesday evenings, commencing on 21 July, 2010, at the home ground of each participating club with the final forming part of the annual Murray Cup knock-out finals day.
This is an exciting period in KZN club rugby with the House of Paint Moor Cup also being contested, where Sharks and Sharks XV – and even future Sharks – are involved in the Premier Division.
In order to encourage exciting, running rugby, certain rule implementations have been made; these are that national Under 19 rules apply, running reserves are allowed, there is no kicking outside the 22, only two points for a penalty and an additional bonus point if a team scores six tries or more. In addition. teams are encouraged to field THREE (3) schoolboys in the starting 22 (Must be 18).
Said Gary Meyer, KZNRU Fixtures Committee Chairman, “We have encouraged the participating clubs to recruit and play school boys in the tournament, introducing them to club rugby and participating at a higher level.
“We are sure this will be a great success and with the support of our sponsors, the beginning of greater competition between our clubs at youth level.”
