The second round of the House of Paint Premier Division competition kicked off with a sprinkling of Sharks players looking for game time and turning out for their clubs which it has to be said, is so good for the game at club level. Envirosan Old Boys had their Sharks flyer, wing Lwazi Mvovo in fine form crossing for three tries in his side's 47-33 victory march over Foton Maritzburg Varsity at Riverside. Oldies' ever-improving flanker Jaco Otto also scored twice against the never-say-die students in an entertaining game that did the club game proud.

Across the Umgeni, Jonsson College Rovers, complete with Craig Burden and Keegan Daniel on board, stormed to another relatively comfortable win, hammering Airtron Harlequins 57-0 with both Sharks players ending up on the score card with tries. Both players deserve huge credit for highlighting the fact that they were proud to be playing in their original colors on the day and to score a try each was also special for them. The other tries were scored fullback Stuart Hudson (2), wing Mark Richards (2), flank Mark Els and centre Jerome Pretorious with flyhalf Wesley Dunlop converting six of the eight tries.

What was even more special at Rovers on the day was Sam Vermaak’s second stringers all wearing pink socks in support of their club manager and rugby administrator Lynn Carolan’s fight with cancer - a truly special moment. Needless to say, with Neil de Bruyn back at flyhalf, the game was turned upside down as Rovers stormed to a big pink victory for their First Lady with a 103-0 win over the luckless side from the Bluff.

In another Premier Division game across on KP 10, Acer Durban Collegians stormed to a 22-3 halftime lead with four tries in the bag against Thanda RZA Zululand Rhinos and playing into the wind one couldn’t help but think that this was going a runaway victory for the home side. It was not to be as the Rhinos stood their ground and in fact outscored their hosts in the second half 8-0 with home side Collegians only winning 22-11 in the end. Head coach Ray van Noordwyk will be scratching his head in total frustration as one cannot believe that a side that looked so good in the first half almost capitulated in the second session - clearly there will be some soul searching with his charges this week.

Collegians tries were scored by wings Kyle Hartley and Quinton Dormehl with front rowers Robbie Harris and Scott Brown going over for the others. Flyhalf Jacques Venter kicked a lone conversion. The lads from Empangeni replied with a try from lock Warren Graaf and a penalty and conversion from scrumhalf Dirkie De Waal.

In the remaining game Goss and Balfe Crusaders beat ChemSpec Jaguars 36-19.

In the under 20 ‘A’ Division Rovers had a walkover against Harlequins ‘Oldies’ are looking an even more improved side as they prepare for the knockout competition after comprehensively beating Pietermaritzburg 48-5 in their final league game. Durban Collegians also finished with a flourish hammering Empangeni 73-17 while ‘Saders’ finished on a high beating Jaguars 37-7.

The under 20 ‘A’ Division Basil Medway knockout competition kicks off tonight with the quarter-finals scheduled for 8pm kickoffs. Jaguars have withdrawn leaving Collegians without a game while College Rovers host Crusaders. Pietermaritzburg travel to Empangeni to meet the Zululand side at Mick Kelly Park AND Old Boys entertain the ‘Mighty Quins’ at Riverside.

In the Under 20 ‘B’ Division DW Geddie knockout competition Rovers are at home to South Coast Warriors, Old Boys host Quins with both games scheduled for a

6.30 pm and at 7pm Maritzburg Host Toti in the Capital on Woodburn 2.

In the First Division South Section final run in Toti suffered yet another set back in going down 18-17 to South Coast Warriors and their chances of retaining their title now look even slimmer.
