The House of Paint Premier Division league is really on the boil now with Acer Durban Collegians, Jonsson College Rovers and Goss Balfe Crusaders the only three sides that remain unbeaten after the completion of the first four rounds.
Collegians now decidedly look more and more like the side to beat although their head coach, the hugely experienced Ray van Noordwyk, wouldn’t like his highly proficient outfit to believe that just yet as the top four sides now start preparing for the final run in of the first round. Collegians have improved with every outing and had little difficulty in overcoming a brave Foton Maritzburg Varsity side 58-18 although it has to be said that the students let themselves down with some crucial handling errors letting in their visitors from the coast with a few somewhat soft tries.
The Collegians wingers Kyle Hartley and Quinten Dormehl, with five tries between, them led the charge that took them home for yet another impressive bonus point victory, leaving them narrowly ahead of Rovers on the log table.
Rovers also had a good win beating ChemSpec Jaguars 57-15 with scrumhalf Shannon Rick, wing Anton Verster, skipper hooker Alistair Schwikkard, flanker Jody Jenniker, Roy Bursey and Abonga Nkwelo all crossing for tries. Full credit must go to Jaguars for not letting up as they came back hard in the first half and at 29-15 were still in the mix, but sadly ran out of steam.
In the other games, Crusaders had a good away win beating Airtron Harlequins 37-14 out on the Bluff while Thanda RZA Zululand Rhinos sneaked home 16-14 against their hosts Envirosan Old Boys at Riverside to wrap up their first win of the season.
In the First Division South Section, Gestetner Maritzburg Collegians are looking more and more like favorites to take home the title in their section after beating Teichmann Bell Ballito Dolphins 36-0. Hillcrest are having a difficult time of it at the moment after drawing 12-12 with South Coast Warriors while Durban Varsity edged out Kokstad 31-25 at the home grounds of the East Griqualand outfit, Elliott Park.
The game between Wentworth and Amanzimtoti was postponed while Vryheid look like favorites to win the North Section of the First Division competition and an end of season clash between them and Maritzburg Collegians looks imminent.
In the Under 20 ‘A’ Division Collegians were made to work a little harder in beating Pietermaritzburg 46-35 with coach Sean Erasmus perhaps a liitle unhappy with the result as it simply wasn’t exactly their best performance. Full credit to their hosts from the capital however, as they performed admirably against the side that has swept all before them in the earlier rounds.
In the other games Oldies managed to eek out a win in the closing seconds of their game against their visitors Empangeni scraping home 28-27 and Rovers with Kelvin Adam and Charlie Purdon crossing for three tries a piece, leading the points scoring spree, thumped a luckless Jaguars side 108-3. Brynand Stander (2), Hendrik Hogenbozem (2), Andrew Norton (2), De Wet Bergh, Leroy Abrahams, Kyle Wilkinson, Reef Nakin, Carl Meyer and Chris Cloete crossed for the others with Meyer and Wilkinson sharing the kicking duties.
Rovers lead the way in the Premier Division Reserve league and the Third Division Walker Cup competition while Old Boys are now in charge of the Fourth Division Foaden Bowl competition.
