The House of Paint Premier Division club rugby competition kicks off on Saturday this weekend with the 2009 Moor Cup champions Jonsson College Rovers traveling to the Bluff to meet their hosts Airtron Harlequins. Needless to say they will be hoping to get their campaign off to a good start as this year's competition is definitely going to be a lot more keenly-contested. The title holders however do know all too well that to retain the most coveted KZNRU trophy they really are going to have to work that much harder this season.

The Ronnie van Rooyen day hosted by Harlequins two weeks ago by all accounts didn’t really tell us too much except that sides like Maritzburg Varsity, Goss and Balfe Crusaders and Acer Durban Collegians are going to be a lot more competitive making for an intriguing 2010 season all round.

Collegians travel to Empangeni to face Thanda ZRA Zululand Rhinos at Mick Kelly Park to open their challenge for the crown and silverware. Collegians over the years haven’t had such comfortable trips to Zululand and will be undoubtedly focused on kick starting the new season off on a high. ChemSpec Jaguars will be hosting Crusaders and Maritzburg Varsity will be entertaining Envirosan Old Boys at their Washington Road headquarters in the capital. All the games kick off at 3.30 pm

Last week's mid-week results made for interesting reading with Teichmann Bell Ballito Dolphins being edged out 17-14 by South Coast Warriors in their second round First Division game on their home grounds. Perhaps for the North Coast side it was the best thing that could have happened as they now know that this competition is every bit as competitive as the Premier Division and that they must simply learn to brush themselves down and focus on the next game going forward. Their first away game will be against Wentworth on Saturday.

In the other First Division games played last week Gestetner Maritzburg Collegians made their intentions quite clear by thumping Durban Varsity 57-3 while Amanzimtoti beat Maritzburg Elephants 19-3 and the game between Hillcrest and Wentworth was postponed due to no lights caused by a power failure.

In the Frank Norris Under 20 ‘A’ Division Durban Collegians remained the only unbeaten side in the competition with a convincing 46-18 victory march over Harlequins while Rovers went ont the rampage to annihilate Crusaders 101-0 and Old Boys destroyed Jaguars 82-0.

Collegians travel to Empangeni this Saturday and will undoubtedly be tested to the full by a very focused and talented Zululand side that beat the Bulls Academy 29-26 in the inaugural National Academy Cup they hosted over the Easter Weekend.

In the other games Rovers visit the Bluff to face Harlequins and unfortunately for them they had such an easy game of it last week they could find themselves being a little complacent, which of course could be spell danger for them against a side that wants to bounce back after receiving a pounding the week before, while Oldies meet Pietermaritzburg on Woodburn 2. It’s also interesting to note that the Maritzburg Academy side beat their Lions counterparts at the National Academy Cup Easter Tournament so we are in for yet another interesting weekend of club rugby.
