Wednesday Column
Acer Durban Collegians, although not very happy with their performance against Airtron Harlequins in the curtain-raiser to the Vodacom Super 14 clash between the Sharks and the Stormers at The Absa Stadium Durban on Saturday, still remained unbeaten after five games in round one of the House of Paint Premier Division competition.
Quins definitely are the one side that thrive at the Shark tank and ran Collegians close nearly causing the second upset of the season going down 17-10 to the log leaders and if one recalls they caused a major upset this time last year when they beat Goss and Balfe Crusaders - also at the Park. For Collegians on the other hand it was something of a nightmare outing described by their Chairman Ian Losinsky as a truly terrible performance, which must have left their head coach Ray van Noordwyk with no finger nails or hair at the end of it all.
Thanda RZA Zululand Rhinos who caused the first big upset of the season last week when they narrowly beat Envirosan Old Boys 16-14 at Riverside, had their second win of the competition when they edged out Foton Maritzburg Varsity 13-6 at Mick Kelly Park in Empangeni and so getting their momentum going. For the students, it must be a particularly frustrating season for them as they really are a hugely-improved outfit and indeed an extremely competitive unit. They have come so close on numerous occasions to register their first win for the year and one just feels it won't be long before they get the sweet taste of victory.
‘Oldies’ had Dale Farnham in good form as they went on to score five tries in their 35-6 victory march over their hosts ChemSpec-DUT Jaguars with their in form flanker Jaco Otto leading the victory charge with two of the touchdowns. For Jaguars it must be pretty trying times although they would have had some encouragement from their second stringers who put in a great performance narrowly losing 21-16 to their visitors.
In the remaining match, Jonsson College Rovers had a good away win out at Ranleigh Crescent in Durban North beating the home side Crusaders 22-12 in a game that was spoilt by the introduction of non-contested scrums. Sadly there was a little altercation over the matter and one has to say we cannot get bigger than the game and should be embracing the fact that with or without us the sport will continue. The Crusaders Rugby Club was actually founded out of Rovers so there should never ever be any animosity between these two wonderful clubs going forward and we as mere mortals should remember that as we are only a small part of the history of the game.
With Rovers now also unbeaten and sharing top spot on the log table with Collegians the big game between these two unbeaten sides, which will be hosted by the 2009 Moor Cup holders at Reebok Park (KP 3) on Saturday a huge turnout can be expected especially as Rovers will be hosting many of their Old Boys in celebration of their annual family day
In the Under 20 ‘A’ Division Rovers hammered Crusaders with 62-0 with their Will o’ the Wisp scrumhalf Charlie Purdon crossing for three of the best. Jan ‘Vaaltyn’ van de Merwe who was named forward of the match also crossed for two while Reef Nakin (2), Leroy Abrahams (2) and Brynard Stander also crossed the line with Carl Meyer slotting five conversions and Stander one.
In the other games Collegians beat Harlequins 51-15, ‘Oldies’ had a run away 74 win over Jaguars and Empangeni thumped Pietermaritzburg 57-0.
In the First Division South Section Gestetner Maritzburg Collegians are looking more and more like favorites to take top honours after their 24-10 win over Amanzimtoti, while Hillcrest beat Durban Varsity 54-0 and Pietermaritzburg Elephants accounted for Wentworth 42-3
This weekend is the showdown between Rovers and Collegians and at the end of it, there will only be ONE unbeaten team in the Moor Cup. Come down to KP3 on Saturday and show your support for your Club. The derby promises to be a thrilling encounter between the two archrivals and there will be plenty of pre and post match activities for all.
