The 2009 Premier Division KZN Club Rugby champions Jonsson College Rovers got their 2010 campaign off on a winning note when they comfortably beat Airtron Harlequins 55-15 in the opening round of this year’s competition. In fact all four of the top four sides from last year’s competition had good starts to the season with good away wins but the results do tend to indicate that this season’s competition is going to be a lot more keenly contested.
The Moor Cup holders did have a very scratchy start and were soon on the back foot against ‘The Mighty Quins’ out on the Bluff and found themselves trailing 15-5 in the first quarter but didn’t take too long after that to get their act together eventually turning 19-15 up at the break. Rovers never looked back eventually scoring eight tries to the two from their hosts. Wing Anton Verster crossed for two with the others going flyhalf Wesley Dunlop, scrumhalf Shannon Rick, their skipper hooker Alistair Schwikkard, No 8 Roy Bursey cousin of Sharks hooker Craig Burdon, centre Arno van Zyl and man of the match flank Mark Els. The multi-talented Neil de Bruyn playing in the unfamiliar position of fullback was a revelation slotting a magnificent drop goal while Dunlop kicked the balance.
Harlequins tries came from lock Jurie Oosthuizen and wing Dean Lovett.
In another game Goss and Balfe Crusaders were well led by skipper Jonno Coetzee picked their momentum in the second half after being level 3-3 against ChemSpec Jaguars at Capell Road in Sydenham to eventually run out comfortable winners with a 36-3 victory. It was a good away win for them to get their campaign off to a positive start, but their where a few nervous Crusaders supporters in stands.
Envirosan Old Boys who trailed 10-19 at the interval in their game against Foton Maritzburg Varsity at Washington Road in the capital eventually emerged winners thanks to a match winning try at the death by flanker Kyle van Deventer getting the Durban North side home by the narrowest of margins 27-25. In the remaining game, Acer Durban Collegians traveled to Empangeni to meet Thanda RZA Zululand Rhinos beating their hosts 36-13 in miserable wet conditions.
In the Frank Norris Under 20 ‘A’ competition Collegians with scrumhalf Kobus Reinach, nephew of the legendary late Bok wing Jaco Reinach, outstanding kept their unbeaten record edging out Empangeni by the narrowest of margins 29-24. Rovers skipper Brynard Stander led the charge with two tries in their 36-10 victory march over Harlequins while Oldies got back to their winning ways with a good 31-23 away win over Pietermaritzburg. Crusaders picked up their first win of the season beating Jaguars 34-31.
In the First Division competition Hillcrest accounted for Wentworth 76-0 in a midweek game while Toti beat South Coast Warriors 29-14. Gestetner Maritzburg Collegians have still to be put to the test after another easy victory after beating Kokstad 85-5, Teichmann Bell Ballito Dolphins had their first away win beating Wentworth 32-0 and Durban Varsity edged out Maritzburg Elephants 10-7.
