Jonsson College Rovers remained the only unbeaten side after the completion of the first round of the House of Paint Premier Division last Saturday and will now have a four point cushion on the log table after comprehensively beating Envirosan Old Boys 34-13 at Riverside.
The visiting Rovers outfit never really looked threatened and ran in five well worked tries albeit against some poor defensive work on two occasions by their hosts. Rovers center’s Jean Stemmet (2) and Arno van Zyl scored tries in a sparkling midfield display while scrumhalf Shannon Rick, flank Justin Downey and fullback Chris Jordaan crossed for the other touchdowns with flyhalf Wesley Dunlop kicking three conversions and a penalty.
Oldies replied with a try from Dylan Rutherford and a conversion and two penalties from Fullback Ryan Matherson.
In another game Acer Durban Collegians had their man for all seasons Rudi Dames bailing them out of trouble with a last gasp winning penalty kick to giving them a remarkable great escape in edging home 12-10 against Goss and Balfe Crusaders. Certainly Saders will be scratching their heads in disbelief having lost a game that they clearly should have won. Missed kicks and easy ones at that together with opportunities cost them dearly. For Collegians it was simply another one of their ‘SOB’ performances that kept them alive to eventually win at the end of it all.
In the remaining games Airtron Harlequins traveled to Empangeni to beat the Thanda RZA Zululand Rhinos 33-23 at Mick Kelly Park in an improved performance from the side from the Bluff and Foton Maritzburg Varsity picked up their first win of the season beating ChemSpec Jaguars 24—7 out scoring their visitors four tries to one.
In the Under 20 ‘A’ Division Rovers fielding a side with a number of key players missing from their line up drew 37-37 with Old Boys in what has to be one of the most enthralling under 20 games of the season and full credit to both teams for producing some truly entertaining rugby that had spectators and supporters alike on the edge of their seats-heart stopping stuff to say the least.
In the other games Durban Collegians had a walkover against Crusaders, which is a little confusing bearing in mind that in the week before Crusaders had only gone down 17-10 to ‘Oldies’, while Empangeni beat Harlequins 27-18 and Pietermaritzburg accounted for Jaguars 49-3.
In the First Division South Section there were a few shocks with front runners Gesetner Maritzburg Collegians losing their first game of the season going down 27-21 to South Coast Warriors while Hillcrest also put a cat amongst the pigeons in comprehensively beating Amanzimtoti 34-13, Teichmann Bell Ballito Dolphins hammered Durban Varsity 72-3 and Maritzburg Elephants edged out Kokstad 18-10.
Full marks must go to Dolf Ferreira of Butcher Block in Pinetown for hosting legends of Natal and Springbok rugby at a fund raising dinner on Monday 31 May at 6.30pm for 7.30pm. It will also be a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Natal winning the Currie Cup for the first time in 1990. Former Springbok and Natal flank ‘Snowy’ Suter has coordinated the gathering and will be looking for help in raising funds for the poor destitute orphans he has been working with and helping over the past year. For any further information contact Snowy at 082-5480575.
