Wednesday Column

While the House of Paint Premier Division and First Division clubs get back into shape in preparation for the re-start of their respective leagues on 10 July there are some wonderful rugby breakfasts and dinners being organized for good causes and celebrating historical milestones and certainly not to be missed.

The first function is the Champions Breakfast, a fundraiser for His Church School which sees Springbok Rugby selector Ian McIntosh entertaining us with his former Sharks and Springbok flanker Wayne Fyvie and former Bok skipper Gary Teichmann at 13 Drake Road in Pinetown. Should you want to book a table or need further information phone Charlene at 031-7015211.

Foton Maritzburg Varsity who will be celebrating their centenary next year are having an Old Boys dinner on 24 July for their Alumni, former Varsity Rugby Club members, Campus League players their sponsors and of course friends and supporters of their club. Craig Jamieson the man who led Natal to their first ever Currie Cup year of glory in 1990 will be the guest speaker with Hugh Farrell. For further information phone 033-3958000 and quote Varsity Rugby.

Earlier in the day there will be a game played between the Varsity Old Crocks and Natal Old Crocks, which will be the curtain raiser to the Premier Division game between the ‘Whites’ of Maritburg Varsity and Thanda RZA Zululand Rhinos. Varsity founded in 1911 have only won the Moor Cup once-way back in 1962 so with their centenary looming could this be the start of something special for Varsity rugby-lets certainly hope so as they do deserve it after all they have been a proud part of KZNRU Club Rugby history.

Finally in the winter of 1910, the year in which the legendary A.S. Langley was appointed headmaster of Durban High School, Glenwood High School as we know it today was founded. Originally known as the Durban Technical Institute the school would ultimately grow to become known as Glenwood High School in 1934 when they moved to their current site in McDonald Road. Before the school could settle down at their new home their fields were infested with grasshoppers in 1935 leading to the Glenwood boys being affectionately known as the ‘Grasshoppers’ in the years that followed. They of course became more affectionately known as the Green Machine in the 90’s.

To celebrate the schools remarkable history the school will be celebrating their centenary in style with a banquet at the ICC on 13 August. With Springbok and Sharks hooker and skipper John Smith as their guest speaker and Old Boy former Scottish and Springbok international hooker John Allan as the MC the school certainly know it’s time to celebrate their very special milestone and look to an even brighter future. Well known Durban entertainer Aaron McIlroy will also be adding flavour to the evening on the night.

The DHS Old Boys are celebrating their centenary this year and will be holding their gala banquet shortly as well with details to follow-all in all we certainly are in a historical period of our lives what with 2010 Soccer World Cup being revered as one of the most successful making us all proud as the first ever World Cup under African Skies.
