Duikers in Kuala Lumpur

Sharks skills coach Sean Everitt will be in charge of the KZN Duikers squad to participate in the annual Cobra Tens competition in Malaysia. The Duikers who first played in the tournament in 1997 will be joined by three other South African sides at the tournament NNK, Hamilton Sea Point Rugby Club from Cape Town and the SA Mustangs.

All in all 16 sides from all over the world will converge on Malaysia to participate in the tournament which celebrates its 39th anniversary this year. The Duikers first took part in the competition way back in 1997 and have played in the final on four occasions. Needless to say for coach Everitt it has been a roller coaster ride to success in his debut season with the Sharks and he will want to finish the year with yet another piece of silverware for the province in the bag together with the prize money $10,000 (+/- R120,OOO) on offer.

The 16 teams are split into four groups with the Duikers in Group D with the Cobras, Australian Legends and RSC Dogs. Group A includes past winners Canterbury Rugby Union and Fiji Red Rock with Royal EME from Malaysia and NNK. Group B one of the favourites of the tournament Penguins International, Borneo Eagles, SA Mustangs and NS Wanderers while in Group C North Harbour from New Zealand are pitted with Hammies, Kenya Harlequins and the Cobra Barbarians from the host country.

The squad will be managed by Quagga’s stalwart and former Transvaal and Zimbabwean player Barnie Barnard while Old Boys hooker Scott Brown will the lead the side, which has a good blend of power up front and speed out wide the two main ingredients for the tens style of rugby.

The Duikers team is Wesley Bodmer, JP Coppez, Richard Strydom, Quinten Crocker, Wesley Dunlop, Gordon Rayment, Ryan Kyle, Scott Brown (captain), Jacques Potgieter, Mike Rhodes, Justin Downey, Alexander Hauck, Dave Hawksworth and Johan du Rand. Manager Ron Barnie Barnard and the coach Sean Everitt
