New Central Provinces Club Rugby Competition - 2009
Three provincial rugby unions have joined forces to provide their leading clubs with something new and different this year. At the conclusion of their respective Club league seasons, three each of the top Clubs from KZN and the Free State, together with two top Clubs from the Griffons Rugby Union, will play in a central provinces club competition. The eight teams will be divided into two sections and will each play 4 cross-pool matches. Section winners will then go through to a final.
With the city based provincial amateur teams from the three unions having withdrawn from SARU's inter-provincial amateur league, there is appreciation of the fact that the national body is supporting the new club competition.
The KZNRU believes that not only has qualification for this central provinces club competition provided an incentive for participation in local premier division rugby, it also provides an opportunity for the best clubs in KZN to test themselves against the best Clubs from the Free State and Griffons Rugby Unions. Pete Smith, CEO of the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union, is aware that "for many rugby followers this new club competition is seen as an interesting experiment, so we are determined to make sure it succeeds. To improve standards, and indeed to survive in some areas of our country, the game at club level needs to try new things. Making changes and introducing different challenges will hopefully keep players, coaches and officials at Club level more interested."
Current CEO of the Griffons Rugby Union and ex provincial coach, Eugene van Wyk, had this to say about the new competition, "There is no doubt that the opportunity for a Club to break from the usual league fixtures and play against different opposition will provide an exciting boost for our two top clubs and presumably for the other six participating clubs as well. By competing on a bigger stage the profile of the Club and its players will certainly be raised."
